York Regional Police are sounding the alarm for condo and apartment residents: a new break-in technique is making the rounds in Richmond Hill, and your unit could be at risk if you’re not vigilant.
Thieves have been “scouting” condo and apartment buildings by applying a glue-like substance to unit doors. This is not random vandalism-it’s a calculated tactic. The suspects return after some time to check if the glue remains undisturbed. If it does, it signals that no one has entered or left the unit, marking it as potentially unoccupied and a prime target for a break-in.
Suspects typically gain entry to condo buildings during the early morning hours, often sneaking in behind residents or through unlocked doors. Once inside, they apply glue to the edges of unit doors and sometimes tamper with communal exits to prevent them from locking, making it easier for them to return later. After a period, they revisit the building to see if the glue is still intact. If it is, they assume the unit is unoccupied and may attempt a break-in.
Residents should stay alert for any sticky residue or glue on their doors or in common areas, especially around the hinges or corners where it might not be immediately visible. If you notice anything suspicious, such as glue or tampered locks, report it immediately to police, your building management, or the superintendent. Make sure all communal doors and exits are properly secured at all times. Getting to know your neighbors and having someone check on your unit if you’re away can also help deter potential thieves.
York Regional Police urge all condo and apartment dwellers to remain proactive and vigilant. This subtle but dangerous crime technique relies on residents overlooking small details.
